How Belonging is Changing
One of the discoveries we have made when introducing the idea of a multigenerational spiritual community that grows to maturity is that many people respond with despair when they see what maturity should look like. They realize that they lack many things and that their families and communities did not provide those resources when they were growing up. The solution has been to teach that belonging is something you create around yourself. Trauma – A or B – stops us from creating belonging around us. Instead we begin to avoid, reject or look for others to accept us. None of these work and should be seen for what they are – the results of damage and not the way to make things right. The revision of the Belonging materials that is currently in progress will do three things: 1) increase the focus on belonging as something we create around us and 2) give a shorter list of discussion questions and 3) produce a new video.
How Belonging Was Developed
While Belonging is the second module in Thriving it was the first module tested. Adding the study of the Life Model into existing recovery groups doubled participation in the pilot program. We took a budget of about $400 and volunteer effort to put together a simple test video that we revised in 2007 for another $200. Right now the video does not look like much compared with the video for Restarting that cost almost 100 times as much but the content still works. We will produce a new video and a final workbook when three things have been accomplished: 1) the program flow is optimized, 2) we raise the funds for a full production and 3) the program has enough field-testing in Thriving programs.
