Register Your Belonging Group

As both the THRIVE training in the 19 brain skills and the Thriving Recovery groups continue to grow there is a need for people to locate a Belonging group near them. We are working on an efficient map system to guide people to you and your group. If you would like to be included in a listing or map please register with us. If you are a Belonging facilitator you will not have a license number at this time so you may register without a number by writing Belonging Group in the license number box on the form. When we have our listing ready it will appear on this website.

How Belonging is Changing

One of the discoveries we have made when introducing the idea of a multigenerational spiritual community that grows to maturity is that many people respond with despair when they see what maturity should look like. They realize that they lack many things and that their families and communities did not provide those resources when they were growing up. The solution has been to teach that belonging is something you create around yourself. Trauma – A or B – stops us from creating belonging around us. Instead we begin to avoid, reject or look for others to accept us. None of these work and should be seen for what they are – the results of damage and not the way to make things right. The revision of the Belonging materials that is currently in progress will do three things: 1) increase the focus on belonging as something we create around us and 2) give a shorter list of discussion questions and 3) produce a new video.

Why do I get transferred to another site for Belonging facilitator information?

Belonging is being developed in connection with the THRIVE training program. In THRIVE training, participants train with a partner to really master the 19 brain skills needed to thrive. The process takes three years and three intensive weeks.

We recommend that Thriving Recovery leaders receive the THRIVE training for their personal growth and to make sure that someone in your group has all the 19 skills.

It is impossible to grow a healthy community without all 19 skills. You can't learn by reading or watching a video any more than you can learn to play the piano by watching a video of a great performance or reading a book about how the piano works. You would be lucky indeed if you were playing the piano well after 3 weeks of personal training and 3 years of practice. Back to our point, Belonging is a prerequisite for entering the THRIVE program and leading a Belonging group is a requirement for completion of THRIVE. Because we are developing the Belonging module in connection with THRIVE you will be transferred to the THRIVE website www.thrivetoday.org for the current facilitator information.

How Belonging Was Developed

While Belonging is the second module in Thriving it was the first module tested. Adding the study of the Life Model into existing recovery groups doubled participation in the pilot program. We took a budget of about $400 and volunteer effort to put together a simple test video that we revised in 2007 for another $200. Right now the video does not look like much compared with the video for Restarting that cost almost 100 times as much but the content still works. We will produce a new video and a final workbook when three things have been accomplished: 1) the program flow is optimized, 2) we raise the funds for a full production and 3) the program has enough field-testing in Thriving programs.

Events

We suggest that all Belonging and THRIVE facilitators consider the three year intensive training from THRIVE with the 19 skills. The next THRIVE training events are in July and November 2008. Click here for the details.

News

The Belonging student workbook and facilitator workbook have been combined into one workbook. The result is shorter and more focused. There is still a lot of latitude in selecting the discussion questions as the workbook includes about three times the number of questions that most groups will cover in a meeting.
